Shirley Stone
Shirley Stone founded Shepherd’s Place Foundation Inc. in 2017—inspired by her own experience with a life-threatening illness that pushed her into homelessness. As a result, she developed a whole new way of dealing with homelessness due to a significant medical hardship that would transform how the housing industry dealt with those in transition, the implementation of a superior level of care had a positive and measurable impact on people lives in transition, called the Hotel Homestay Transitional Services Programs. In 2004, Shirley Stone had been diagnosed with a spinal disorder and was informed by doctors that she needed emergency surgery to restore her ability to walk again. Shirley lost her job, home, cars, personal possessions, and friends. Shirley found herself in a wheelchair in a homeless camp, living out the back of her storage unit. She experienced firsthand what it was like to be lost and unable to receive social security or government benefits due to not having a home address while struggling to access quality medical care. Nevertheless, Shirley recovered from a stroke, spinal surgery, and homelessness which motivated her to publish her personal life story from desperation and destruction to faith, hope, and perseverance called “Crossroad To Deliverance” Shirley has come to many crossroads during her life, some leading down to what should have been her ultimate path to destruction.
But, by the grace of God, Shirley beat and broke down by life, eventually stumbled upon a path led by the loving light of a few Christians, mentors, and those who prayed and interceded for her, which ultimately led to deliverance. Shirley knew she had to do something to help others in their time of need to overcome the frustrations she experienced with the existing fragmented and unsympathetic governmental laws on transitional services, housing programs, and the healthcare system, so, she founded Shepherd’s Place Foundation Inc. – to turn the housing system around and make it more focused on offering assistance, referrals, and transitional homes for temporary long-term stays to individuals in transition due to hardship. Shirley’s major accomplishment has been “The Hotel Homestay Program” which serves to stabilize individuals, families, veterans, and the elderly who are in transition, her partnership with hotels, medical facilities, and community agencies allowed her to offer housing assistance, her partnership with Government Officials help to establish community service employment with hotels for skilled trades training and certification programs with the Department of Labor for individuals who have misdemeanors and felonies and need employment to pay their fines which has forced the repeat offenders recidivism rates to drop, her motto is “Lay a Foundation where faith works to give you a fresh start” We are all one paycheck from being homeless because no one wakes up and says I want to be homeless.
